IX. INTERNATIONAL ISLAMIC LAW GRADUATE STUDIES SYMPOSIUM
The Ninth International Islamic Law Graduate Studies Symposium, hosted by Istanbul University Faculty of Theology, Department of Islamic Law, is scheduled to take place on October 26-27 with the collaboration of Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Istanbul Daru'l-Fünûn Ilahiyat Foundation, Ilim Yayma Foundation, and Ensar Foundation.
The International Graduate Studies Symposium on Islamic Law offers a platform for master's and doctoral students from various disciplines to present and engage in discussions concerning their research and ideas on Islamic law with fellow scholars. This aims to enhance the quality of research and ideas, while also fostering interaction and integration among emerging Islamic law researchers, paving the way for knowledge transfer and collaboration within the field.
The symposium, open to master's or doctoral students, will concentrate on biofiqh at the intersection of medicine and fiqh. In this context, the focus will be on the primary issues in the field of biofiqh, encompassing bioethics and moral theories, the Islamic legal perspective on human body ownership and principles, organ transplantation and ethics, the notion of death and brain death, euthanasia and the right to refuse treatment, aesthetic interventions and ethics, stem cell research and ethical considerations, genetic interventions and the genome project, genetically modified organisms, fetal interventions and abortion, medical confidentiality, homosexuality and ethics, physician-patient relationships and malpractice, and medical and bodily concerns in Ottoman fatwa collections. Additionally, the symposium will feature classical and modern debates in other domains of Islamic law.
It is crucial that the papers submitted to the symposium are original and address contemporary issues or challenges in biofiqh and Islamic law from an Islamic legal standpoint. Rather than descriptive texts, papers that problematize issues, possess a specific focus, and propose solutions are expected.
Abstracts must not exceed 350 words, and applications should be submitted through https://ihls.istanbul.edu.tr/tr/_ All submitted texts will undergo a refereeing process, with acceptances announced following the evaluation of referee reports.
